SYDNEY, This Day. A million potmds sterling was lost in vages as the result of tho Newcast e strike. Another serious effect for New South Wales is the loss of the Victorian Government's patronage. Since the strike ueean, the Victorian Government has opened a State Mine at Powlett river, and the railway supplies are being dravMi from it. Eventually it will he more widely availed of. Tho New South Wales trade with the Philippines also has received a setback, and the coal industry has receivnd a, set-back that will need many years' time to remedy. Tlio Borehole miners are still fractious, and will not return to worl; to-day. They complain that the management, contrary to an undnrtakhig given a few days ago, is endeavouring to make alterations in tho working conditions.
