THE MAIL SERVICE AND HAWKE’S BAY.
A period of not less than seventeen days transpires on this occasion between the arrival in Wellington of the mail -via Panama, and the departure of the return mail,—the inward mail having an’ived there on the morning of- Saturday last, 21st inst., and the return mail not leaving until the' Bth of next month. Under any rational system of mail delivery such a period affords ample time for the transmission and collection of mails from all parts of the Colony; but- under the Government mail scheme Hawke’s Bay at leart is cut off from all participation in the benefits of tbe Panama service.
Our regular outward mail via Panama had already left the port some days before the in ward mail arrived at Wellington, and though it happens that a supplementary mail will be made up this morning by the. Wellington, such forms no part of the Government mail scheme, and it is in fact to the arrival and departure of such chance steamers that the public of this Province are indebted for any opportunity of benefiting from this most costly, and as it might and should be under a well devised plan, most valuable service.
