THE NEW TOUR ROUND THE GLOBE.
j ' (From the LondoriandjChiaa Herald;) It really is wonderful to see the development of the route round the world by-means of steam both afloat and on shore, aud we cannot help thinking that- if the peninsular; and Oriental Steam. Navigation Company and the Pacific Mail Company were to conclude some' combined arrangement whereby passengers could be conveyed completely through from London to New York* oT vice, versa, by way of thePaand were to have a reliable guide boW published, that* they would induqe a vast deal of, travel, even during the, present incomplete state of the facilities. Let us for one moment sketch the route so unmistakeably indicated, though not thoroughly complete. Starting, from London, thereis the trip CeniSji and down- to This portion of the route is being improved upon every month, and by the time the tunnel is,completed it certainly must cut out Marseilles ia the transmission of the eastward mails. "We need say nothing ; of. the inducements for • travel which. this part of the route presents. Then the traveller willproceed. to Egypt, where he can inspect M. Lesseps’ ditch, and all the antiquitijes. Thence he will be conveyed by. mail steamer , to . Bombay, and thence across India: by rail; to Calcutta. Thence to-China by an-opium steamer, calling at Penang and Singapore. At IJongkohg he will find excellent facilities for visiting the ; 'south of China and Manila. Returning to Hongkong,, he can '.visit the open ports as far as Shanghai, knd take ..a rnn of 800. ® Q .^ es ; PP the Yangtse in a magnificent steamer. . Returning,to Shanghai, he can proceed to- Japan, and thence by the Pacific Mail Company’s boats to <Mfoniia: .’ln * shorttimethe Pacific Union Railroad will, become available, with s the assistance of relays, and will convey the - traveller* across North Afiierica to New York, whence he can return to England by steamers running thence per, week. The realisation of this route is not chimerical nor contingent on any expectancies the whole is actually in rapid' course of Pand the completion is certain, and not: dependent on any. event; When the variety of country, ; the diversity of people, and the vastness of . tfie spaced tra'vbmed be contemplated, . theresult must;, be deemed .an achievemeht of commerce whichu gives great f hopes that the of tradetfill " deyelop the resources 'of the earth for theuse hardlydreamed
