THE CHATHAM ISLANDS.
were received by tlieHerald from WeUingtoit on Tuesday last to theeffect that the s.a; Storm Bird had returned early that morning from the Chatham Islands, and reported that the escaped prisoners had killed one of the guard who had opposed their escape, and that three of their number had been left behind. These,- it seems, were not favorable to the scheme, and had actually given information of the intentions of the others, but their warning was unfortunately not regarded. They were, however, forced to keep out of the way until the main body had gone, when of course they were safe from their revenge. The booty they carried off with them from the Cbathams consisted of £6OO cash, 20 to 30 stand of arms, and 4000 rounds of ammunition; —this of course in addition to the stores obtained from the Rifleman. •
