The Hon. Mb Eitzhebbebt. —This gentleman, who is now absent in Eng'and, has obtained from the House of Representatives leave of absence for six weeks.
We learn that it is in contemplation to start a paper in Sydney to be called the and that it is intended to take London contemporary of the same name as its model.
Me G. B. Easton - , of the Sydney Empire, has been appointed editor of the Otago Daily Times, at a salary of £750 ayear. He was to leave Sydney for Otago on-the Bfch inst. New Coal Seam at Whaeeoea. —Coal is being found in all parts of the Erovince. A settler writing from Wangnrie, of date the 7th July says': —“Herewith I send' yon a sample of coal from a seam recently discovered on my land at Whareora. The pieces I have sent you are small, but the coal can be got in large lumps.” The box of coal sent to us appears to be of excellent quality. We will, however, as our correspondent requests us to “show it to Borne person who can judge of its quality,” and inform him of the result through our columns. —New Zealand Herald, 15th July. Gold Eypoet. —The following table of gold produce of New Zealand, for ten years, with value, is very interesting : L 856-7, 976 ozs.; value £3784 1857-8, 1722 ozs. ; £66,730. 1858 9, 9452 ozs.; £36,747. 1859*60, 6147 ozs.; £23,818. 1860-1 6341 ounces; £24,568. 1861-2, 449,279 ounces ; £1,740,956. . 1862-3, 504,896 ounces; £1,953,354. 1563-4, 559,727 ounces; £2,165,672. 1864 5, 420,598 ounces; £1,631,179. 1865-6, 735,816 ounces; £2,858,078. 1866-7, 674,5!5 ounces; £2.605,789. The falling off in the last year, as compared with the previous y ’ar, is a little remarkable. Early in February last a private belonging to the 14-th Regiment of Foot, having gone to his quarters in a somewhat, ntoxicated state, was ordered to bed b.\ Sergeant Gibson. He appeared to be aggrieved by this, and as soon as the lights were put put he seized his rifle, called out “ Gibson, look out; I’m going to shoot you,” and fired. He did not hit Gibson, but an unlucky comrade, named Barratt, who was in bed, was struck ihe ball, which passed through the right thigh and wounded also the .left leg Brrratt’s wounds healed, but he died a few days ago. Prisoner has already been committed for trial on the charge of attempted murder. —Home News.
Volunteering in New Zealand. —We regret to find that Lieut.-Col. Gorton s appeal for volunteers to reinforce Lieut.-Col. M'Donnell at the front lias not been sufficiently responded to. YVe hear men on all sides declare that they will not volunteer to take the field under the present system of government; nor can we blame them. The present, however, is a case ol emergency. Let Sir George Fergusson Bowen assume his authority as Couiaian-der-in-Chief, and Colonel Gorton’s call for volunteers will be cheerfully responded to. Colonel M ( Donnell wants about fifty oi of the Native Contingent not particularly as fighting men, but as guides, and men who could obtain information of the enemy’s movements. They won’t serve under the present Gwernmeht. We trust the Governor will do his duty. We believe that Dr Feat hers ton could take out not only fifty, but the whole Native Contingent.if he called upon them to follow him.. We have thejauthority of influential nutive chiefs for this statement. They say “ We believe in what ho says.”—Wangauui Timeß, 14th July.
