Proposed Penal Establishment at Tabanaki. —A proposition lias been set afoot by the Taranaki Association, “That it would be beneficial to the province if the Sugar Loaves were made a depot for convicts, in order that the province might benefit by their labor in forming a harbor,” or other public works. The Taranaki News speaks very favorably of the project, as also does the Nelson Colonist.
Ratal Accident. —By the arrival of the cutter Wangarei we learn that a young man named Adolphus Backman lost his life whilst on his passage from Auckland to Wangarei, under the following circumstances i —The unfortunate man was a seaman on board the schooner Argo, and on Monday evening, as the vessel was going in to Wangarei, he was knocked overboard by the staysail. The vessel was immediately put about and the boat launched. Backman was picked' up after being about teu minutes in the water, .but he was quite dead. The body of deceased was taken into Wangarei, where an inquest was held on the following day before Sir Osborne Gibbes, Bart. . . The following verdict was returned:—“ That death was caused from apoplexy, produced by a blow from the sails and submersion.” The deceased was buried at Wangarei on Wednesday iast.— New Zealand Herald, July 11.;
