Local Memoranda.

Auckland. —Our files are up to the evening of the 17th inst. Numerous extracts will be found elsewhere.

The reports which from time to time have reached this province of the continued success of the Thames gold-fields, has had the effect of draining' Hawke’s Bay of a large’number of laboring, people. The s.s. Rangatira which, left for Auckland on Tuesday evening, was the bearer 6f.no less than 84 passengers—most of whom, no doubt, will soon find their way to the diggings.

Statistical Tables. —We have to acknowledge the receipt from the Registrar General of a series of tabulated statements compiled from the late census, and published in anticipation of the more extensive, work. Our limits to-day will not admit, of more than this acknowledgment ; but we. Bhnll take an early opportunity of referring to them more in detail.

Navier .Volunteer Band.—We understand that the committee of the above or ganisation has already forwarded, an order to the firm of Messrs Wilkie, Webster & C 0. ,: of Melbourne, for 20 instruments, together with a draft in part payment for the-same, said draft being that portion of promised . subscriptions already paid up. The Instruments in question are expected to arrive in Napier early next month, when, it will he necessary to provide the balances of their cost, it is to be hoped that promised subscriptions will be. promptly paid, and that an appreoiating and liberal public will; Supply the remaining portion, which we understand is about £BO.

The , Alliance.— The appearance of a weekly paper bearing the above title, devoted to the advocacy of prohibition of the traffic in intoxicating liquors,- speaks favorably for the progress of the’ temperance cause in Canterbury. By the. last mail from the South we received a file of the above, and are able to speak very highly of the ; manner in which it is got up, and are glad to find that it bids fair to he successful, its circulation already amounting to 1200 copies weekly, and its advertising columns being well filled. The principle of the United Kingdom Alliance, which is to place the licensing question in the hands of the rate-payers of each district, is that advocated in its articles,—a principle with which we cordially agree, aud hope soon to see an accomplished fact.
