.. Great Floods in the Middle Island, —A telegram from Otago dated 15th June, 8 p.m. published in the Wellington Independent, states that terrible floods have occurred in Otago. Rain had fallen without intermission for 2-4 hours, Main-street was flooded, the Bank of New Zealand was two feet under water, and communication with the country, suspended. At Ross the whole district was one sheet of water. The weather at Oamaru is described as being frightful. News of much the same character comes from Timaru, where the brigantine Despatch, Captain Driver, from the Chatham Islands, with a cargo, of cattle, was stranded at 3 a.m. on the 15lh, Captain Driver having beeu .killed’b? tha fall of the-galley;
Heavy Gale at Greykouth.—The Grey River Argus says :—“For the last forty eight hours, one of the : most violent southerly bursters ’ has prevailed on this coast that can be remembered. The wind blew in squalls , with tremendous • force, accompanied with heavy falls of rain and hail. The temperature; being cold, added to the general, discomfort. ~The: bar was rendered entirely impracticable to shipping except at the cost of being half swamped with the boiling sea and heavy rollers whioh swept in towards the beach j and-the -river was washed with waves of sufficient size to render navigation by: boats dangerous. All the steamers kept to their moorings at/the wharf., A boat was capsized on Tuesday night . through being" struck with a squall, and a man drowned ; anj. a vessel,, the Nile, was blown, ashore on the North Beach.. . The river was much swollen yesterday, hut no damage was done by the floods.”. !’ ! :
