FOUR-TON CRANE.

To the Editor of the Hawkds Bay Times. - Sir, —ln looking over the llawkds Bay Herald of Saturday last, 1 see in the Provincial Engineer's report on harbor improvements, that a fourton crane had been erected upon the new Government wharf; bid it is not staled in how many heaves it is supposed to lift the above weight. It is quite a known fact that it.will not lift one eighth vart of that weight with safety, as on every occasion when a heavy weight has been attempted to be raised by it, something or other has been carried away. In the first place, in trying to lift a tank of malt, under a ion weight, into a low cart, all the stay-bolts drew. Second, in lifting an obelisk, the bearings all split, and, no later than Saturday last, the chains carried away in lifting a cask of of talloio under 6 cwt., letting down the jib, and endangering the lives of the people employed. As this structure is neither we nor ornament , but a heavy expense to the Government to keep in repair, the sooner it is laid up in ordinary along with the other provincial curiosities the better.—l remain yours truly ,
