Deceased was formerly a private in H.Mj.’s 14th Begiment, and, at the August , sittings of the Supreme' Court,. 1864, was convicted of horse stealing, and sentenced to four years* imprisonment with hard labors ■ We^theb.—The weather during the past three, days has been of a very boisterous and , unpleasant character. On Saturday afterhoon a heavy fall of'rain took place, accompanied* by loud peals of thunder and some very: vivid flashes of lightning. l . Nabieb Brass Bab o.—We understand that some of the many lovers of harmony in this town have resolved oh the establishment of a brass band, and that tlie project harjbeen fostered,in such a way as to promise a successful- issue. Already thirty members have been enrolled,. of whom fifteen are professed performers ; and Captain; Withers has kindly-consented to exercise supervision over them.. It; is intended, if possible, to f secure the services of Mr Collins as instructor, - and also to make a call on the public shortly for pecuniary aid towards the purchase of instruments. W e have no doubt that such call will be liber
ally and that Napier will, ere long, be able to vie with some of the larger towns of the Colony in the matter of its Volunteer Band. • ; '
Public Meeting-.— A numerously attended- meetiog:-was held last 'evening in Mr S. Begg’a /store, Eastern Spit, for .the purpose of considering the advisability of fomuriga/Volunfceer Corps for the: Spit'. A. Kennedy, Esq!, was called; to-the chair; TheV following resolutions were unanimously carried Proposed by, Mr Rich, seconded by Mr Trashy,“That the;corps be a Volunteer Artillery . Corps.” ' Proposed' By Mr Cresswell, seconded by Mr Charles, “ That the corps be named the Napier Volunteer Artillery J: Proposed by. Mr- Stables, seconded by }Mr Charles, “ That .Mr . A.'Kennedy be elected Captain of the Napier Volunteer Artillery.” Pro; posed by Mr Cresswell, seconded by Mr tTanisch, “That Mr J. M; Tabuteau, be elected: First-Lieutenant.”; .
