THE NEWS FROM THE SOUTH.
[The opportune arrival on Saturday I afternoon from Wellington of the s.s. Ahuriri, has put us in possession of our usual files of papers from the Southern Provinces, from which we lare able to glean several items of | intelligence, the most important' of {which we proceed to place in a condensed form before our -readers/ | ‘ '- - t t j The Horn E. W. Stafford has Diet jhis conslituency at Nelson, and iu a 'speech of some three hours’ duration ! has vindicated, or attempted to viadiWte, the* course of policy he has pur 'sued during his last ,term of office 'j We think that althcugh : he seems to j'have cleared up satisfactorily some p points of a doubtful character, : ther< f jare others, and these of primary iinpor ■ltance, in which he; seems th have sig Anally failed to satisfy* bis expectan
auditors. 'Perhaps Ahe mostprouai--BeM of such 5 relates' to the passings of; the act; fori the consolidation of provincial loans. /better- knowm as, the public. As far as the Public Debts- Act is concerned Mr Stafford entirely failed to,satisfy his constituents of the necessity or wisdom of the mear sure.” Wa will endeavor. to give a succinct abstract of Mr Stafford’s address in our next. Mr. Luckie ably replied to much of Mr Stafford’s defence. ■ From WeUingtoh we learn that the memorial to the Governor from the Bangitikei settlers, requesting that a further inquiry might be made into the case of Whiter. Trieker, has been summarily, disposed of—such commit-; tee of enquiry being We give in another place a leading article from the Wellington Independent on this subject. Mr Fox, also, who was a member of the Ministry that recommended a commutation of the original sentence to Sir George Grey on account of the doubtful features of the case, has written a powerful letter on the subject, which we regard as unanswerable. 1 A local fire insurance , company has been started in Christchurch in consequence of the exorbitant rates charged by the old companies. The project promises to prove a success. From Otago we learn of the safe arrival of the Celestial Queen with the ova of salmon, trout, &c,, packed in ice. This venture seems to have perfectly succeeded so far as it is possible to judge at present. The contents of the boxes have been carefully deposited in hatching boxes belonging to,/the Acclimatisation Society; and in a carefully contrived hatching pond on the Water of Leith. The principal portion, however, were, conveyed to Molyneus river, where tj&.ey have been safely deposited. These comprise 70 boxes, which turned out about 8,000 ova ir first-rate condition. The success whict 'has attended similar experiments ii j Australia gives good ground for th< hope that a. short time will suffice t( see the rivers of this Colony wel stocked with * the favorite fish of tin
old country. The expense of this experiment is borne by the Otago Pro-; vincial Government. Eleven boxes of j salmon ova and six tons of ice were' ; transshipped to the steamer Auckland j and forwarded ■ tp Canterbury for the Acclimatisation Society of that province; They were received in Canterbury on the 6th inst. :
