Commercial Intelligence.

Canterbury.— The Canterbury Times, of the 7th March, contains the following report:— <

A brisknesss still exists in the demand for fat cattle, and any stock of. this- description brought to the sale yards are eagerly competed for. showmg a determination on the part of West Coast dealers not to he beaten by the Australian; cattle shipped to the Coast,. The chief cause of the present spurt in the market is, that the floods passed over the pastures where the dealers had their stock: since then they have fallen off considerably in condition, thus compelling those in the trade to purchase more freely at the sales, so as to keep up their constant supply to the Coast. The bidding at the Carlton yards last Wednesday was very brisk, and nearly 60 head of cattle were sold; 1800 sheep wore .also yarded, and nearly the whole sold. The yards were not large enough to allow the whole to come under the hammer, and many purchases were in consequence made privately after the auction. In stations, we observe that the Tarandale run, in the Nelson province, is to be sold by auction in Cnristchurch, on the 18th inst. ,
