DEATH OB THE GOVERNOR, SIR DOMINIC DALY.

We regret to have to report the death of his Excellency Sir Dominic Daly, Governor of South Australia, -which occurred yesterday at Government House, Adelaide, somewhtt suddenly. He had for some time been in ailing health, and it will be remembered was prevented by illness from taking part in some of the celebrations in honor of the Prince’s visit to Adelaide). No intelligence had been received for some time regarding his health, and it was believed that he had sufficiently recovered to attend to his ordinary duties. Yesterday afternoon a brief telegram was received in Melbourne stating that. his - Excellency died at - two o’clock, having been ill all the morning. We are not at present in a position to give any particulars respecting the nature of his illness. r
’ Sir Dominie Daly was-the-son - of Mr J)ominic Daly, a gentleman of property in the county of Galway, and nephew of the
IffstXord Wallscourt. He was born in 1798j*5»jnd, consequently, was seventy years of ageattlie time of his death. He married atthe age .of twenty-eight, and shortly, afterwards entered upon official life in the Colonial administration. In 1829 he was appointed to the office of secretary to the province of Lower Canada, which he retained for eleven years. He then became Secretary to the United Provinces of Canada, and filled that office from 1840 to 1848.., .During the period of his holding those positions in Canada he was employed by the looal Legislature on several important missions, „ and the manner in Which his official life was regarded by the Home Government was such as in 1852 to procure him the appointment of Lieut. - Govemor of the Island of Tobago, whence in 1856 be was transferred to the more important station of Lieut.-Governor of Prinoe Edward’s Island. The honor of knighthood was conferred upon him at the same time. He was appointed Governor of South Australia in 1861, and came out from England in the Suffolk, accompanied by Lady Daly and his family, He arrived at Melbourne on Feb. 19th, 1862, and reached Adelaide March the sth. just prior to the departure of his predecessor, Sir R’ohard Graves MaeDonneli. He has since tha? time administered the Government of the province in a manner which has gained for him the respect of all classes of the community, while the private and social life of the Governor and his lady was suoh as to render them very popular inAdelaide.
