one man burnt TO DEATH. !.
INQUEST AND u VERDICT OF WILFUL MURDER. . ! .
By our files .received last. night, we learn that a destructive place in, Qo-lombo-street, Christchurch, on the nightps the 7th inst. Several houses were burnt down, and an unfortunate man named John Rankin," who had been sleeping in one of the houses .destroyed, was burnt to death. An inquiry was held on the 10th inst., when the'following - verdict was returned : —“ That the prisoner John Dasely Swale, on the night of the 7th February last, did unlawfully, feloniously,'and trial!eioujly set fire to a certain house in which one John Rankin was at the time residing, and the jurors say on 1 their oath .that the said John Dasely Swale did. .thereby wilfully murder and kill the said John Rankin.” The prisoner was then removed s in custody.
