ARRIVAL OF THE LORD ASHLEY FROM AUCKLAND.
The arrival of the s.s. Lord Ashley <>n Wednesday placed us in possession of Auckland papers to the 10th inst.
The intelligence from the gold-fields continues interesting. The following paragraph from the New Zealand Herald, of the 10th inst., will show that the Thames diggings are attracting attention in distant places:—“ From a private letter received by. Mr H. Meyers, of Queen-street, from San Francisco, under date December 10. 1867, we learn that two vessels, the schooner Alice and barque Domingo, had been laid on for Auckland. Both vessels were full of passengers, who are coming here to try their fortunes at the Thames gold-field. A number of these passengers only arrived in San Francisco from Aucklaad by the Circular Saw Libers Kate and Constance.”
Great preparations are being made for, the. reception of the Duke of Edinburgh. ... -
The Bay of Islands coal miues continues to ;yield, satisfactorily.
Reliable in telligence* had reached Auckland that no discussions whatever took place at the' great Tokangaiiuitu meeting held, on: the> 25th January. The New Zealand Herald says“ The late -meeting;-broke up in bad humor, ipany being sorely grievhd that not one subject out of the many : which , were
to have been submitted to the meeting was settled. There is a growing desire to unite with the loyal party in 1
the bonds of brotherhood, but the same feeling is not yet extended to the European race.' Kingites say that we triust confess our sins and make .repa-' ration, and reconciliation thorough and permanent will be effected.” The native news generally seems tobe considered encouraging by the Auck-
land press. It is stated in the Auckland papers that Bishop Pompallier will shortly leave New Zealand for Europe and the Holy See; and at a meeting held on the 4th inst., it was decided to open a subscription list to aid His Lordship on the above journey. The market reports and copious extracts from the journals to hand wilL be found elsewhere.
