The s.s. Star of the South, Captain Bendall, left Napier on the evening of Saturday, 11th January,., with a cargo of live stock, &c., for the Nelson Market. Fine weather and light winds were experienced as far as Cape Palliser, which was rounded at 8 p.m. on the 12th. That night when in Cook’s. Straits, a strong N.W. wind sprang up, which shortly after increased to a gale. In consequence of which, bore up for shelter under Cape . Palliser. Next day (13th) weather having moderated'proceeded on-ner voyage; and arrived at Nelson at 4 a.m. on Thursday, 16th inst. Landed her cargo in good order and condition; and left for Napier ontSaturday, 18th inst. Experienced fine weather up,r and, arrived here on Monday afternoon. During, the heavy N.W. gale which was experienced in Cook’s Straits on the night of the 12th, several of the Star of the South’s sails were split; and MrNiccl the first mate, who was aloft during part ot the time, got jammed'in the rigging, sustaining: considerable injuries, from whioh, however, he is happily recovering. Captain Bendall reports that while he was in Nelson a telegram from the Bluff had been received announoingthe arrival ofthe s.s. Omeo, from Melbourne, without the English Mail, it not having arrived up to time of her depart ture from that port. -

The schooner Coquette (a sister boat to our old. favorite the. Saucy Lass), Captain Matheson, leftMercury Bay at 8 a.m. on Saturday, 18th iust., with 40,000 feet timber, 15,000 shingles, and 2 passengers/ Rounded the East Cape at 4 a.m. on the following' day; and Portland Island at 8 o’clock same night. Brought up at the anchorage on Monday afternoon, after a splendid passage of two days and a halt Westerly and nor-westerly winds were experienced, throughout the passage. The ketch Speedwell, Capt. Davis, left Auckland at 6 p.m. on Tuesday 14th inst. Had strongTT. winds for two days. Rounded the East Cape on Thursday night. On Friday, strong S.E. wind was, encountered; towards night hauled round to the northward, very light, which she carried as laras Portland Island, from whioh place to port, N.W. winds prevailed. Arrived in port on the afternoon of Monday, 20th inst. Cargo :—IOO,OOO shingina, 100 palings, 5,000 feet timber.

The schooner Muriwai, Capt. Harris, left Poverty Bay at 4 p.m. on Wednesday last and arrived import at 8 p.m. on Thursday, having experiehcea light easterly winds and fine weather down the: coast. Cargo:—222 bags grass seed, Watt, Bros.;* 4 boxes apples, Bishop Williams; and one passen--ger.

The cutter Betsy is still’ashore at Poverty Bay,being inside the bar at the B.ig. River, and imbedded in the sand to the depth of five fbet. : Tha Muriwai, which returned to Turanga yesterday,' was tbe hearer of some screws,; & c., for the- pur-*; pose of trying to raise the Betsy. We trust that the endeavor will he successful. The. cutter Bittern, Stuckey, master, left forAuckland via the East Coast, on Tuesday afternoon last in ballast.

• The schooner Hero, Campbell, master,: (which, vessel has been undergoing repairs during the pash' week or so) will leave.forrWairoa to-day or tomorrow.
