. Scoxiiebs’ Race between Hickey and Geeen. —The Sydney Mail, Nov. 1, Bays : —“A race in wager skiffs between Hickey, the champion scnller of Australia, and Green, the ex-champion, came off over the usual course, on the Parramatta River, on the 26th ult., the stakes being £l2O, laid by the former against £IOO of the latter. The event, however, terminated very un~ satisfactorily in consequence of Green, who looked very much like a winner, getting on shore, thus allowing Hickey to get a start, which he kept to the winning point. Very little interest was taken in the affair, and, consequently, the steamers City of Newcastle, Oollaro.y, Kembla, Vesta, Gomea, aud Sir John Young, which followed the race, were very poorly patronised. Upon arriving at the convincing ground, both men, who appeared in fine form, pulled leisurely to the starting point, and at 16 minutes and 30 seconds to 5 o’clock they dashed away, Hickey slightly leading. Green, however, soon overhauled him after a few strokes had been pulled, and at Ryde Wharf lie was a boat’s length a-head, pulling out in the middle of the river, whilst Hickey steered close in shore. After pas sing Ryde Wharf, Green shot over towards the Mill Point, upon which he unfortunately grounded, having at the time a clear lead of two boats’ lengths. Hickey soon came up, and ran the nose of his boat between Green and the shore, but seeing the position of his opponent in time, he backed water and pulled roifndthe stern of Green’s boat, and dashed away. Green, as soon as he touched the rock, jumped out of his boat, pushed her off, and was in and away after his opponent in an incredibly short space of time. He was, however, unable to get his feet in the straps again, and. was forced to he content with finishing the course about 30 yards astern of Hickey. The flag at the winning point fell at 10 minutes and 24 seconds past 5 o’clock, making the time 26 minutes and 24 seconds against wind and tide. It is to be regretted that Green met with this accident, as it was the general opinion that he had the race all his own way. -At s the conclusion of the race Green entered a protest against the stakes being paid to Hickey, as the boat which accompanied'the latter crossed Green’s bow several times. »The stakes were paid over to W. Hickey, the successful competitor, on Monday morning, by Mr R. Driver, at his office. The delay in paying over the stakes arose irom the fact that Messrs. M'Grath and Punch’s hotel was literally taken possession of on Monday night by the partisans of either man, and it was a moral impossibility to clear sufficient space in any of the r rooms to allow of the stakeholder handing over the money-in a proper form. The protest handed-in'on behalf of Green was not -deemed admissible by. the referee, Mr,Ri Driver; and Mr Dawson; solicitor, onbehalf of Mr Green, gave formal notice that legal would be instituted to recover the money. It is anticipated that another match , will be made; the result of the last heing deemed unsatisfaotory by Green's supporters;*’ . :Coppeb Tokens.— The fourteenth and fifteenthsections of the Coinage Offence* Act,- which came into operation on the Ist instant,-, appear to impose, upon all persons uttering.: or ; receiving; cupper tokens a penalty; of . imprisonment. ; not exceeding twq years, or of penal eervittide not exceeding seven years in duration.
