CANTERBURY.

The Lyttelton Times of the 6th gives the following particulars of the fire at Christ’s College, Canterbury:—

The fire originated and entirely consumed the eastern building appropriated to the use of the Head Master arid his pupils. The alarm was given at ten minutes'past two a.m. by a maidservant of the Rev. W. C. Harris, who first observed the fire in the roof of the scullery through a chink in the wall. The Head Master at once roused his household, who had ample time, to escape, as for some time the fire confined itself to, the kitchen and outoffices. So slowly indeed did it spread that a great part of the furniture and clothes of the family and pupils was got out of the house before the fire fairly laid hold of the building. In the work of saving property we particularly noticed two men of the uairie of Macfarlane and Quigley, who were first on the : premises and saved much valuable .property by their individual exertions. The . police also were early in their attendance, and in conjunction with the Fire Brigade Police maintained' most admirable order.- The band fire engine, reached the .scene .of action and; took; up its position close .to. the foot-bridge . lead-) ing from. Armagh-street into the ParkJ Both engines were'admirable; worked, the only subject of regret being, that they were- not on the scene a little earlier;: -■ ;r . We are happy ,; to say that no casualtyof any kind occurred. : The building wa£ insured in 5 tlie Liverpool and London Office for £2G0,0, and; the: furniture in-the London land- Lancashire for 4300. We understand that,

irrangements are being entered into yhereby the Rev; W. C. Harris will iave the use of Bisbopscourt while he new building is in course of jreciion.
