NELSON GOLDFIELDS
(From the Colonist, Nov. 6.)
Our Goldfields are progressing, and the stream of digging population is still coming northwards. AtMokihinui, a river which was desolate a few months ago, a town with about two thousand buildings has sprung up; the gold is being found in good payable quantities, and already a large-trade has arisen on the place. By latest arrivals-we learn that a new rush had taken place at this river, in the latter part of last week. The direction of the rush, which is well Bpoken of, is towards, the Little Wanganui river; and the Mokihinui gives promise of speedily being a place' of groat importance. Charleston, too, is d rich gold-producing locality; and Westport, with its noble river the Buller, is now a large and growing town. Nelson, as his Honor the Superintendent stated to the Council last week, “ is now fast attaining, if it has not already attained the position of the largest gold-producing province of New Zealand. The latest returns show that in the three months to Sept. 30, she produced 68,427 ounces, of the value of £265,164. Otago has yielded less than half that amount, 32,778;-and Canterbury, 71,200 ounces ; making the total yield for the quarter from these three provinces, 172,405 ounces of gold, worth £666,070 sterling; which is at the rate of 689,629 ounces, or considerably over 2£ millions sterling per annum.
