NEWS FROM TAUPO.
(Prom the Daily. Southern Cros«, 12th Nor.) We have news from Taupo to the 28th ult. Our readers are already aware that sittings 'of the Native Land* Court were.ji&lcl at Maketu, ai d Ohinemutu, Rotorua. After the busness before the latter Court had beeu disposed of, Mr Fenton returned to Auckland, while Mr Monro proceeded on to Taupo. A sitting, of the Co- ft was held there on the 28th, at w: icb a considerable amount of land was adjudicated upon. Mr Monro and Captain Heale left Taupo on the 29th ; and on arriving at Tauranga, finding that there was no immediate prospect )f their being able to get away from that place they undertook the difficult and not very safe journey by Katikati to the Upper Thames, coming out at Ohineroa, nearly a day’s journey above Ohinemuri. From that place Mr Monro and Captain Heale canoed down the river to Kauwaeranga, which they reached on Saturday. Mr Firth, Mr C. 0. Davis, and Mr J. W. Preece were at Taupo. Mr Firth had some business before the Court, and also was anxious to get his cattle through to Waikato. There are three aukatis across the country between Taupo and Waikato; at the first all travellers, whether Europeans or friendly natives,, are simply w’arned back; if they persist in going on they are stripped at the second; and if they still persist they are killed at the third. The natives guarding the third aukati are such a lot of reprobates that little doubt is entertained but that they would fulfil their commission of murder if they had the chance. It was. the opinion of the people of Taupa that nothing would induce these people to permit a passage through. ;
