The vote of £I,OOO for the expenses of a Commission to inquire into the subject of a Central Penal Establishment for the Colony, has been passed. As an instance of the necessity for such, an institution, Mr Stafford referred to the case of the notorious murderer Sullivan living in Nelson gaol, and associating daily with young lads confined for petty offences, able even to talk, and laugh, and joke with persons in the street while going to and returning from his work.

A despatch has recently been received from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, suggesting that in every Colony containing naturalised foreigners who are likely to travel in Europe, it would be convenient that notice should from time to time be given in public newspapers of the necessity for such persons providing themselves, before leaving the Colony, with some official evidence of their identity and description.—N. Z. Times, Oct. 23.

Acclimatisation Society. —The Acclimatisation Society’s grounds were a centre of attraction to holiday makers on Saturday last, and rapid progress is being made The cleanly condition of the aviaries, the healthy and sprightly appearance of the birds, as well as the flourishing Btate of the garden, were very much admired. We observed an Australian sparrow building and laying, and a Rockhampton sparrow also building. A number of chaffinches which were received in a sickly condition, a few weeks since, are now in perfect health, and a lark which, when received, was almost destitute of plumage, is now nicely feathered. We were also kindly shown nineteen hen pheasants, and a healthy clutch of ten young ones that were hatched by. a common hdh from a n«*t of eleven eggs. The birds feed well, and are in excellent condition. Contiguous to the neat curator’s house, which is now finished and occupied, there is a triangular enclosed space which is to be covered with wire netting, and here we saw several nests of pheasants* eggs .which: are being hatched by common domesticated liens, for the purpose of exchanging with other kindred Societies. - Two Aides of- the grounds are already, securely fenced with boards, and on the whole the place is rapidly becoming a most attractive spot. —N. Z. Herald, November 12. '
