> The Wellington Independent, 26th-Oct..' says : The Government steamer St. Kilda, Captain Fox, arrived from the Chathams at half-past ten o’clock last night. She sailed from Napier on''the 12th October, and with the aid of a strong north-wester made a splendid run- across of 52 hours., Having landed stores, &0., she sailed for Wellington at noon on Sunday last (the 20th), again experiencing strong N.W. winds throughout the passage. At midnight on Thursday , the vessel was off Cape PalUser, but it blew so hard that Capt. Fox found it necessary to stretch across to the Kaikouras,' and could not get into harbor till the time indicated. Captain Fox speaks of the weather having been very severe. When 65 miles east: of CapeT alliser a piece of wreck was picked-np, apparently a portion of the stern' of a small vessel; with a watercloset attached/- The wood was kauiri pine, and had been painted.. There were no- marks to show to what vessel the wreck .had belonged. It had evidently been’in the 'water some tiine, as it was covered with barnacles. ; The St; Kilda brings several Maori passengers, and one or -two men -belonging to the guard on- the islands. When .she left the Chathams, all was quiet there. ’ We believe’it is intended to fit up the vessel at.once for a surveying expedition on the West Coast; : The s.s.
