MELBOURNE. October 2. The meeting to establish au institution in aid of indigent persons of education was held, and an influential committee appointed. Mrs O’Neill (late Miss Quinn) has been again brought up for larceny and discharged.
The Governor sent an address to the Council recommending the passing of the Darling vote; the consideration of the Message is postponed to Wednesday next. One hundred tons of Victorian flour sold at £ll 10s ; cornsacks, 12s 6d ; 505 chests fine Congou ex Te Kli, were disposed of at 2s 3d to 2s 7d in bond. The Portland which arrived to-day, from New York, brings 2000 packages of tobacco, but it is not expected to affect prices.
SYDNEY. October 3. New diggings have been discovered near Braidwood, eighteen miles from Nelligan. The gully is a mile and a half in length, and the sinking 5 feet. Sixteen ounces of gold were obtained for three days’ work of three men.
October 4. In the Assembly last night, the debate in committee on the Railway Loan Bill was continued, and on a division Mr Tighe’s motion,, inserting the figures £1,000,000, instead of £3,000,000, to be raised for railway purposes, was carried.
ADELAIDE. October 4. Arrived.—Edith Smith, from Mauritius. The captain distinctly denies the news propagated by the captain of the Jane Bell, as to the arrival of the. Galatea at the Cape.
