OTAGO. Driver, Maclean & Co.’s Monthly Beport of Live Stock, Stations, Wool, &c.: — Dunedin, 4th Oct., 1867. Since the issue of our last monthly report we have no change to note in prices then quoted, except forfat stock of good quality, which has slightly advanced in value, withmoaevate supplies to hand. But few transactions of any magnitude have taken place instore sheep, holders preferring to wait until after shearing. It is impossibe at this time to form any very correct estimate of prices for delivery before shearing, but we have no reason to anticipate any very material reduction upon last season’s prices. Our sales have been at prices mentioned below: * Fat Stock.—As before intimated, the market has been hut poorly supplied with either beef or muttou of good quality, and we cannot expect any permanent change for two to three mouths. We quote town rates, say best quality beef, at about 50s per lOOlbs; ditto, muttou, at 5d per lb; calves, scarce, at from £4 to £slos; lambs, good quality, 15s to 17s 6A Store Stock.—We have lew transactions to guide us, and quote following nominal prices for sheep: ewes, 2,4, and 6 tooth, at 18s to 19s; lambs, equal sexes, 22s to 23s per fair North, and 25s to 26s per pair South; wethers, 6-tooth to full mouth, at 14s to 15s, with good demand for paddocks. Store cattle are scarce, and in good demand, and good lots are saleable at about £8 for mixed herds, and £9 to £lO for 3 to 5 year old bullocks.
Daily cows continue saleable at £ls to £2O. Horses.—The only arrival of importance during the month has been that of the Omeo, from Melbourne, with 108 head, chiefly heavy draught horses—all of which 4 sold readily, and at remunerative prices—say, for mares and geldings, according to stamp, £65 to £75. Some superior geldings, imported by MrStrachan, realised the latter high figure. There is a brisk demand for really good draught stock, and this is likely to increase as the wool season approaches. Good weight-carrying hacks are also in demand, and scarce. A moderate shipment of this description would result satisfactorily to the importer. Our present quotations are:—First-class draught mares and geldings, £55 to £75; medium do. do, £4O to £SO; first-class weight-carrying hacks, £z7 to £4O; ordinary and inferior do., £ls to £25. Pure Stock. —We would draw special attention to the fact that George Murray, Esq., of the Grange, East Taieri, has determined upon disposing of the whole of his pure-bred Leicester sheep and short-horn cattle, by public auction, early iu the new year.
Stations.—We have no transactions to report. There are several buyers in the market, with but few desirable properties'offering. After shearing we expect.several will be placed in the market. WooL—Our English advices to the Ist of August via Panama reached us on the 39th ult. Arrivals for the August series of sales, which.it was expected would commence on the 23rd of that month, would probably amount to 160,000 hales. Business continued v.ery dull, and notwithstanding money was unprecedently easy, and the prospects of the harvest fair, no improvement on June rates was looked for.
Shearing will begin hereabout the end of next month; and from all we can learn, we hope to he able to report a considerable increase on last year’s dip. We are advised, that several new buyers will be in the market daring the season, and we look' for fair competition. ‘ , l -- > No transactions have taken plaice here during the month. ; but feUmonger’s parcels are now coming forward more freely., Sheepskins.—-We have no sales of importance to report. This month’s skins are saleable at 3s 9d to4s. - 1 '’ ' '.
-Hides remain unchanged, very few offering,' :. Tallow has suffered a further reduction, and we now quote fair sorts, at £25 to £27 por ton.
