EXPORT OF FLAX.
(Southern Gross, September 12.)
We are glad to obeerve that the attention of ,merchants is being directed to the-ex-port of Auckland flax, owing, to the efforts recently made.amongßt the working .-classes to augment, its production; , The parties of unemployed who, under the auspi.ces\of the flax-hackling societies, have been -_or« ganised for. the . working of this material, are already creating, a supply, of the’ best possible description, in the market; this has been absorbed for export ip,sample shipments to England, Melbourne, Sydney, and other markets. Twenty tons are. exported to M elbourne to-day in the steamship Lord Ashley, and six. tons to the same market in the brig Susan—representing, at the low estimate of £2O per ton, a sum of £520. The Alice Cameron, for Sydney, took 27 -hales shipped by Mr G. W. Owen.; and the Ironside, which leaves to-day for Engjand, takes 10 bales shipped by Messrs. Bucholz and. Co., as a sample of the description of. flax produced here. Of the 26 tons alluded to above] Messrs. Combes and- Daldy export 15 tons, and Mr C. J. Stone five tons, to Melbourne ; and Mr Balharry sends a shipment of six tons to the same market, via Newcastle, in the brig Susan,, which sails this morning. Several tons are also to be forwarded to Sydney in the Moa, which sails to-morrow; and there is every indication that a constant export of the material will be kept up as the supply increases. We will only add that tlie samples most admired, and calculated to realise the highest price in the markets to which they have been forwarded, are, those produced without.the aid of chemicals, and with no assistance except that afforden bo a copious supply of water, by steaming, and the use of. the most approved hackling machine.
