HEAVY FLOODS ON THE SPIT.
Three days in succession we , have had a strong N.E. toN. W. wind, the effect of which has been to force a large quantity of water into the bay ; and being at the time of new, moon or highest spring tides the floods are much higher than usual. Yesterday the sea was dashing over, the Spit the whole afternoon'from 5 ito 8 p in. Except a,few Isolated spotsj the. iand was submerged - the Custom House, Postoffice, merchant’s stores, &c., all standing out of a- watery waste, We have only known one occasion ou which the water has been higher, which was on the 4th June, when the water was higher than we have ever known it to be, but only some 4 inches higher than on this occasion. The wind at the time of this writing' still continues, and the probability is that we shall experience a succession of floods. We find that a good portion of the pilot reserve has been carried away by the sea, and the flagstaff is in danger.—August 1.
