TO THE EDITOR OE THE HAWKE’S

BAY TIMES,

SIR, —Permit me. through the medium of your journal, to cull the attention of the guardians of the public good to the way iu which a licensed public house in. | the townshio of Hampden, called the Hampden Hotel, is conducted. Having business that detained me in that townshio for two days, I had occasion to put up there, and was subjected to continued annoyance by being almost compelled by the landlord to “'hour’ and toss for drinks, iwhich, though rodsting to the utmost, I was forced to do several times for the sake of pmco. The house is also open all iiours, and a great annoyance to any tra** roller, who may unfortunately have to stop there for a night.

My compulsory shou'ing and tossing during my stay there cost me, including a pair of boo:s, the sum of 305., which £ oiicred to pay, but. Is. fid. more, which I had already paid for a dinner, was demanded again, and of course refused, and became the subject of a case before the Waipawa Court; while there before the court I complained to the sitting magistrate of the conduct of the plaintiff, but was not listened to. I am, however, thankful that it is possible to expose abuses through the Press, and trust that the publication of the above will effect the abatement of the nuisance complained of.
