THE SUPERINTENDENT Of AUCKLAND AND SIR GEORGE GREY.

(From the New Zealand Herald, May 13.)

•The visit of the Superintendent, Mr. John Williamson, to .|he Kawau, has been looked upojuasohe of no little significance to the interests of the province; Much of the Superintendent’s power to benefit the province in certain directions depends on the cordial support and co-operation of his Excellency Sir George Grey. It is gratifying, therefore; to know that Mr. Williamson, who returned from the Kawau to Auckland on Saturday, was received in the kindest possible manner by Sir George, who expressed his intention of taking up his residence more permanently in Auckland-than he has been in the habit of doing for some time past, and that even, when necessarily in the South, should he receive an intimation from the Superintendent that his presence is required here, in the interests of the province, he§will come up at once. In reference to the banquet and reception proposed to be offered to Sir George Grey on his arrival in Auckland, we learn that Mr Williamson, in. answer to a desire expressed by him: to the Governor that his Excellency would land in such a manner as to-allow of the. public reception being carried, out as proposed, was assured by Sir- George that he felt gratified at the desire of-the people of Auckland to receive him as her Majesty’s representative, with' such demonstrations of respect and regard on his return home to Auckland. It was, we believe, more than, his Excellency expected. In many of the Southern districts which die has visited lately, the people have never before been visited by the representative of royalty, and it was natural, therefore, that his Excellency’s arrival among them should have been attended with the public demonstrations which marked his progress through the South; but though this is not the case with us in Auckland, it is not the less incumbent upon us to greet his Excellency on his arrival; here with similar honors. If they, felt it incumbent upon them to welcome a stranger guest, we have the more cause to welcome an old one bn his return after so long an absence. That the reception accorded to him will be worthy both of the representative of our Sovereign aixd of the people who make it, we can, "tire think, safely leave with the ’ Superintendent and people of Auckland. The day will, we believe, be proclaimed a’ public holiday, and be celebrated not’merely by a public banquet, to which his Excellency will be invited as a guest, but in such manner as the people- at large can fully share-in. ; l As we mentioned- some days since, Sir George-Grey s will arriye/in Auckland on the 20th jpstant, this day week; His,-ExceUepqy; will -remain hers -uptiJ he. will, retqra South to prepare, for the, .ppenipg;. qf t ,,tbe ; wiU mpet in tbp middle ot ing , . that the Governor; highly, approves of Hr
