RIFLE MATCH AT HAVELOCK.

This match, the result of a challenge ‘ from the members of the Napier Rifle s Club came off at Havelock on Satur- ' . day, 27th April, between eleven members of the Napier Club and an equal number of competitors from various parts of the country. Capt. Withers having kindly granted the use of the . Militia target, and also a supply of ammunition for the occasion, all arrangements with regard to the range were left to Mr Garry, on whose ground

[ Uri excellent range was provided. On account of the early hour at which the : i shouting was to commence, most of ‘ r the competitors passed the previous ; night at Havelock. Arriving on the ; ground all expressed themselves satis- , fied. with the range. The weather • proved all that could be desired, and no dispute arose to mar the harmony of this, which was certainly the most successful meeting of the kind ever held in this Province. We subjoin the scoring, by which it will be seen that tbe Napier Rifle Club were the victors by 21 points. As will be observed, however, the contest was a very close one during some part of the time, and the second and third highest scores were made by two of the coun* try competitors, Messrs. Small and Hollis, who scored respectively 41 and 40 points. In firing the two parties were alternated, but we give the scores separately. The shooting commenced at half-past nine a.m., and was concluded at three p.m. The firing over, the competitors adjourned to partake of an excellent repast pro- : Tided for them in a spacious tent by Mr T. Reynolds. A very pleasant hour was spent in agreeable conversa tion, and in discussing the good things of this life, during which many desires were expressed that this might not be the last of such meetings. The following are the scores:—
