THE APPROACHING ELECTIONS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES. Sir,—A week more and we will ie m the midst of the noise and excitement of electioneering . Certainly if there is one thing more than another far which the people of “ dull" Napier deserve renown, it is for the most profound apathy they display ilia, matter which concerns every soul in this favored (?) township. Who is going to represent vs in the next Council ? Nobody knows. Who care to be the five chosen ones of the capital of Hawk?s Bay Province (with its 8000 inhabitants; eh, Mr Editor, that?s good !) ? Nobody cares. Sir, with your permission, I will just draw ovt a brief “ sketch!' of the likely ones for the Provincial Council Handicap. To begin, of course the big Scotchman, Donald, (not Taylor, of sporting celebrity,) is the favorite. It is set down as \among the things inevitable that the Super, will go in at the head of the poll. The next one is—who shall I say ? — Buchanan. Yes, there is great talk about him, and if he allows himself to be nominated, (of which there is very little doubt), why it is my belief he will secure second honors—that is, of. course, barring accidents. Third—Wilkinson is spoken of, but he had a seat for the country last Council, and perhaps will go in for the country again. If not,but an the contrary, tries the town again, it is very probable he willyo in easy. Now for Nos. four and five —Napier returns but five members. There's not the slightest doubt but that if Messrs Colenso and Edwards (inseparable pair!) allow themselves to be nominated they will stand a very good chance of being placed, even if it is at the tail end of the poll. To tell you the truth, Mr Editor, Ido not expect to see either of the two last named gentlemen go in again, and lam not at all likely to be disappointed. ■ So there must be two others to fill \ their seats. I will mention one name and leave it \to the Napier electors to find the other. The I name I refer to is that of James Meliss Stuart, who has lately returned from the old country. That is all I am going to say at present, Mr Editor. Another week will decide all as far as the town is concerned; therefore it behoves the electors to see to their interests in time. I may state here, sir, that although I have stated that I entertain no hope of seeing either Colenso ,or Edwards again in our Council, ' I intend to vote for theformer gentleman should he come forward; and, certainly, as a writer in the New Zealastd Herald said, about two years ago, “ Without hm (Mr Colenso) the Provincial Council of Hadkds Bay would be a sham and a humbugP

I am, #"c., Hotspur. . - . P.S.—I have just heard that Beardon, ofths “ Green Boot? is likely so be d candidate. Perhaps he will get in.
