YACHTING IN ENGLAND

Victory for the Yankee (British Official Wireless Service.) RUGBY, June 17. The yaeht Astra bad a steward washed overboard and drowned and Sir T. 0. M. Sopwith’s famous yaeht Un deavour was dismasted during a race for J class yachts at Southend regatta to-day, the first event in British waters in which the American yacht Yankee was competing. The Endeavour was leading when the accident happened. The Yankee reached home ahead of Valsheda, the only other competitor, and was awarded the race.

After being discarded in 1930' and left on the beach for nearly four years, the Yankee was fitted out again last season to take part in the trials for the selection of the America Cup defender. With the veteran yachtsman, Charles Francis Adams, at the helm, she was very successful in the early trial races and at one stage appeared likely to be chosen as the defender of tiie cup, an honour which ultimately lei] to the Bainbow. Recently she crossed the Atlantic to compete in big classical races at British regattas this season.
