TENSE SITUATION

JAPAN’S ULTIMATUM Drastic Action Contemplated WARNINGS ISSUED TO CHINA (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 8, 9.50 a.m.) TOKIO, June 8. A war council of Japanese military commanders at Tientsin is preparing for drastic military action in North China. It is understood that Japan is sending an ultimatum to the Chinese Government and that the situation at Tientsin is tense following a march of Japanese troops through the Chinese areas of the city. It is announced that Japan intends to “ demilitarise” Tiestsiu and Peking, whore, it is alleged, the Chinese are directing the activities of bandits. A Shanghai message states that peace in North China still hangs in the balance as the result of the dissatisfaction of the Japanese military with the reply by General Ho Ying-ehin, Chinese War Minister, to the Japanese representations regarding the administration of Peking and Tiestsin. The Ambassador, Mr. Ariyoshi, had declared that the Japanese have no intention of occupying Peking and Tientsin, but Colonel Sakai, Chief-of-Staff of the Japanese Forces in North China, speaking on behalf of the War Office, informed the Chinese that such steps were unavoidable if the Chinese fail to heed repeated warnings.
