PRISONER OF ZENDA
An all-singing version of Anthony Hope’s famous novel, “The Prisoner of Zenda,” may be among this year’s screen offerings from M.G.M. Irving Thalberg has engaged Ernest Vadja, the scenarist, to make a screen adaptation of the book. And reports from the studio state that Thalberg is considering turning it into a musical film, with Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy starring. Thalberg has been impressed by the remarkable success of the MacdonaldEddy combination in “Naughty Marietta.” The pair are already booked for a “repeat performance” in “Maytime,” an operetta by Sigmund Romberg. “The Prisoner of Zenda” would offer even greater opportunities for their romantic style.
“Viktoria and Her Hussar,” the spectacular musical play, with Sylvia Welling and Jack Mayer in the romantic leads and Oskar Denes in the leading comedy role, is coming to the end of its successful run in Melbourne, and will be succeeded by “Ball at the Savoy.”
