DIFFERENT OPERAS
Ivan Menzie’s MHake Ivan Menzies, who has returned from England to appear in Gilbert and Sullivan Opera under the J. C. Williamson Limited management, said that the rapid rehearsals in Melbourne for three different operas to be presented in Adelaide in quick succession reminded him of his Gilbert and Sullivan touring days in the English provinces. “When the opera is changed every night,” he said, “one gets a bit mixed at times. There was an occasion when, after making my first exit as the Duke of Plaza-Toro I stripped for my complete change of clothes. When my dresser came in he was aghast. ‘You’ve made a mistake,’ he shouted, ‘you go on in ten seconds! ’ and it was true. I just managed to struggle into the high boots and seize my all-enveloping cloak and make an entrance. The stage manager was waiting for me when I came off. ‘Here, what’s this new business you’re introducing? Standing there like a mummy dressed in a shroud. That’s not G. and S.’ I said: ‘Don’t despise my cloak. It's just saved me from going to gaol.”
