ELIZABETH BERGNER

Film Offers Refused Since she has been in New York repeating her London success in the stage play “Escape Me Never,” Elizabeth Bergner has been overwhelmed with invitations to go to Hollywood to make pictures. She has refused them all, despite the fact that caeh new offer has been accompanied by a bigger financial inducement than the last. One of the earliest offers made her was 75,000d015. or £15,000 for one picture. According to present arrangements she will return to England on the conclusion of her New York season to begin work on the film version of Shaw’s “Saint Joan.” After that she will appear in a play that her friend Sir James Barrio is writing specially for her. Hollywood must wait—probably for a very long time. Bergner’s latest film, shortly to be released in Australia, is the British and Dominions picturisation of the record, breaking stage success “Escape Me Never,” which created a sensation on its recent premiere at the Pavilion Theatre, London, and is due for release soon in America. It is not often that America clamours for a British production, but such has been the demand for this one that arrangements have been made for it to be shown in over 5000 American theatres within the next few months.
