GALLERY OF VOICES
Collection By 8.8. C.
RECORDS OF PERSONALITIES A gallery of voices is being created by the British Broadcasting Company, which one day will rank in importance with the great national collections. It comprises records or cylinders of the voices of prominent people made at various periods from the earliest days of the gramophone to the broadcasting To take some examuplos.. All the American Presidents of this century are represented. There are records of the first Lord Tennyson, Sarah Bernhardt and Caruso. Mr Churchill and Mr Lloyd George may be heard at several stages of their careers, and Mr Asquith explaining his Budget of 1908. There are records of Herr Hitler, Signor Mussolini, President Doumergue, Mr Shaw, Mr Wells, and so on. The collection has proved so invaluable to broadcast “actuality” drama that it is being rapidly extended. Among records now being sought is one made by Mr Gladstone. Recording is playing an increasingly important part in 8.8. C. affairs just now. It is a singular thing that though the 8.8. C. has been in existence for over 12 years, the corporation has only just acquired its own recording van. This vehicle now carries the 8.8.C.’s own Flying Squad. If it is possible for sound, without sight, to illustrate anything, the Flying Squad rush to the spot and make a record, which may bo played back immediately. Four 'microphones and two disc-recording machines are available. The “mikes” may be taken 300 yards from the van.
