TROPICAL CYCLONE
TEXAS COAST SUFFERS LOSS OF LIFE RESULTS. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE CAUSED. NEW YORK, September 5. A tropical cyclone of terrific intensity roared into the United States from the Gulf of Mexico to-day, isolating Brownville, Texas, and causing untold damage along 200 miles of the Texas coast. A message yesterday from Browns ville says that 20 persons were killed in that area on Tuesday by the Gulf hurricane, which continued for ten hours. Edinburgh (Texas) reported on Tuesday that 12 were known to be dead and upw-ard of 50 injured and many million dollars damage caused when the Gulf hurricane laid waste the rich and populous Rio Grande Valley. Reporting on tho effects of the hurricane on September 4 the officer administering tho Government of the Bahamas says that it passed westwards through the north-west, channel about 35 miles north of Nassau, devastating the settlements at the northern end of Eleuthera. Property at Harbour Island suffered considerable damage, and people sus tained injuries at Bogue, whither medical assistance was sent. He was relieved to find so little damage considering tho violence of the gale. . '
