DESTRUCTION OF BUSH.
(To The Editor.) Sir, —Attention has been drawn to the alleged unnecessary damage being done to scenery (native bush) on the main Waikaremoana-IlotQrua road. Three years ago a campaign was carried on by the Hastings Chamber of Commerce for the preservation of all native bush on the above-mentioned route, from a point two miles to the east of Te Whaiti to the Waikcremoana Lake outlet. The co-operation of Chambers of Commerce throughout New Zealand was obtained and representations were made to the Government, the result of which was that a promise was given. by the Government that, before any partition or sale of lands in the above-mentioned area was made, full provision for scenic reserves would be made. It is desirable that the whole of the native bush through which the Waikaremoana-Ko-torua road runs should be proclaimed a scenic reserve and bo held as a tourist route for all time. The Government now owns about half the required area, but Natives own the balance. 1 trust that the promise made by the Government in connection with the above will be honoured. —Yours, etc., F. E. SMITH, Chairman Scenery Preservation Committee, Hastings Chamber of Commerce. Hastings, 8/9/33. Appended hereto js the report submit-
ted by the Hastings Chamber of Commerce:—
