An. unusual position has arisen at Auckland University College, in that four vacant professorial chairs have to be filled simultaneously at the beginning of next year. These are the chair of English, which Professor C. W. Egerton has filled since 1894, the chair of mathematics, which Professor H. W. Segar has filled since 1894. the chair of history, which Professor J. P. Gross, innnn occupied from 1915 until his departure last year, and the chair of classics, occupied by Professor A. C. Paterson from 1924 until his death last year. Professor Egerton and Professor Segar are retiring on superannuation.
