WAIPAWA DISTRICT INTERESTS. From Our Own Correspondent. At a special meeting of the Waipawa Borough Council the Mayor (Mr G. Hunt), after consideration had been given to the estimates for the year, gave notice to move that a general rate of 3Jd. in the £ on the unimproved value (an increase of (d) be struck. Appearing on the estimates is a sum of £lOO for the upkeep of the Municipal Band, covering bandmaster’s salary and other incidentals The Mayor moved that this amount be cut down by half or the instruments called in. An amendment by Cr. Eagle that the amount be left at £lOO and that the band be approached with the object of assisting with the finance was carried. There was a very good attendance at the annual meeting of the Waipawa association of Girl Guides, covering the Waipawa, Waipukurau and Otane Urea. Mrs R. Tod presided. Comprehensive and encouraging reports on the activities of the year were presented by Miss McHardy, provincial commissioner and Mrs J. J’. Walker, the secretary. Officers for the year were elected as follow: —President, Miss Jull; vice-presidents, Mesdames R. Tod, P. McHardy, L. H McHardy, H. M. Rathbone; secretary, Mrs J. P. Walker; committee, Mesdames Kingston, Thompson, Adeane (Waipawa), Clark, White and Petersen (Otane). The following will represent the Waipawa Golf Club in a match with Hastings on the Hastings links over the week-end: Tickner, Lockhart, Shackelford, Witherow, Bryant, Rust, McKay, Dawkins, Strang, Guthrie, Trevena, Edwards, A. Jull and Dwight. Following is a list of the passes in the grammar of music examination of the Royal Schools of Music: — Grade IV (rudiments). —Esme GHill (Mrs Swain). (From Our Special Representative.) The following players have been chosen as the Central Hawke’s Bat Rugby representatives to play East Coast, at Porangahau on Saturday:— Full-back: Rangi Rupuhu. Three-quarters: Haldane, Knobloch, R. Thompson. Five-eighths: Tremewan, Aldrich. Half-back: A Smales. Forwards: Front row, Collett, Brain, Dassler; middle row, Lane, Ross, G. Phillips, V. Maaka; back row, A. Wilson Emergencies: Forwards, Spotswood, M Maaka; backs, Dawson Hcpen, Tuki Logan, and Aldrich. The team wili assemble at the Waipukurau Post Office at 1 p.m PLUNKET SOCIETY MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau branch of the Plunket Society was held on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs J. Hobson presiding over Mesdames W. A. Chambers, J. A. Chambers, J. W. Harding, P. Hunter, Percy Hunter, I. W. N. Mackie, C. R. Moore, J. C. Nicholls C. Pallison, E. Broad and the secretary Mrs J. H. Walker. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames J. D. Ormond, L. G. Harker, F. A. G. Dunn, M. Joblin, and G. E. Gideon. The nurse’s report for the month of August was as follows: —Visits to rooms: Waipukurau, adults 122. babies 100, children 20, total 242; Takapau, adults 44, babies 38, children 6, total 88. Visits to homes: Waipukurau 63, Takapau 9. New cases: Waipukurau 5, Takapau 1. Cases under care: Waipukurau 176, Takapau 66. Mesdames 1. W. N. Mackie and J. W. Harding were appointed visitors to the Plunket rooms for the ensuing month The sum of £5 13/- was received from the Rev. H. Dyson, being half the net proceeds from the entertainment “Treasure Island.” The Rev. Mr Dyson was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A letter was received from Mrs B. Mathieson resigning her position as hon. secretary of the society. A resolution was passed expressing appreciation of the excellent services rendered by Mrs Mathieson during her term of office. Mrs J. H. Walker was appointed hon secretary and Mr J. H. Walker, hon. treasurer, the latter in lieu of Mr B. J McCormick, who has resigned. Accounts amounting to £l6 0/8 were passed for payment, NEWS AND NOTES. On Tuesday afternoon the members of the Waipukurau Red Cross visited the Pukeora Sanatorium, spending a pleasant afternoon with the patients. The following contributed towards the afternoon: Mesdames H. De Lacy, F. Hopkinson, H. Duckworth, D. Scott, Vesty, A. Timms, W. Jamieson, D. Mills, E. Broad and G. L. Jamieson (papers). Mrs H. A. Speedy, “Taniwha,” has left on a short visit to Palmerston North to stay with her daughter, Mrs Eric Mabin. Prior to his departure for New Ply-
mouth, Mr H. Rowlands, who has been a member of the Waipukurau Fire Brigade for about 11 years, was met by his colleagues and presented with a tobacco pouch, as a token of the esteem in which he was held by his fellow members of the brigade. Superintendent J. A. Chambers made the presentation, referring in eulogistic terms to Mr Rowlands services during his association with the brigade.

NEWS ITEMS. From Our Own Correspondent. The monthly meeting of the Takapau branch of the Hawke’s Bay War Relief Association was held on Tuesday evening in the public library, Mr E. F. Stubbs (chairman) presiding over Messrs N. M. Paulsen, W. Cuthbertson, J. Caughley and G. S. White An apology was received from Mr J. W. Cato, who was unable to be present. Correspondence was received from the Hawke’s Bay War Relief Association, Napier, relative to recommendations made for the August meeting of tho executive. Seventeen grants for temporary assistance were authorised. It was reported that the grant for wages subsidy provided by the National War Fund was being satisfactorily utilised. The W.D.F.U. shop held recently was successful in clearing a sum of £26, which, under the circumstances, is considered a very satisfactory result. In the guessing competitions, the cake went to Mrs Hutchinson (Otawhao), a crate of fowls to Mr M. J McKenna and a doll to Peggy Power
