Playing on a heavy ground but in splendid weather, the Wellington Colts touring team to-day defeated Wairoa by 21 to 12 after the most spectacular game witnessed here for some years. The game was fast and willing throughout, the home forwards dominating the play from bell to bell and outplaying tho visitors in this department during the whole game, but their backs were palpably weak and could not finish off the fine movements of the vanguard. Wairoa lost the game through not possessing a goal-kicker, not one of their four tries being converted, whilst Wellington secured no fewer than 15 points in this direction, plus two tries. The match was noted for hard play, Wellington suffering particularly by losing Baldwin early in the game, whilst Kenny was carried off in the second spell. Their injuries were not serious. In addition, a number of the players suffered knock-outs, whilst the homesters had only one minor casualty throughout the game, The Wellington backs were very good but spoilt many movements by running across tho field, so gaining very little ground. Their handling and combination were very good, whilst their tackling was outstanding. For the winners Jolly and Ball scored a try each. Jolly secured eleven points by goal-kicking, and Tindall secured a field goal. Foster, Instill, W. Smith and S. Smith scored tries for the losers.
