CABLES IN BRIEF Harbour Bridge victim. A woman who went to her death over Sydney Harbour bridge yesterday was seized by a passing workman, who held her suspended in mid-air until his strength gave oub, when he was compelled to release his grip. He called for help, but other pedestrians were so petrified that they lent no assistance. She was the thirtieth bridge victim. British Air Passengers. All records tor cross-Chaniiel air traffic were broken during August. A total of 12,035 passengers passed through the Croydon airport, an increase of nearly 1000 over the number for July when the previous record was established. Wrongful Dismissal. In the Supreme Court at Sydney, Mr Frederick Hutt, former deputy-chair-man of the Metropolitan Meat Board, obtained judgement against the New South Wales Government with £3OOO damages for premature termination of
his services. Mr Hutt was a Lang Government appointee with a tenure of five years. He was dismissed along with several other Lang appointees in other Government positions after the return of the Stevens Ministry. Death of John Rowland. In the Criminal Court at Sydney, Claude Wallace, aged 25, a motor mechanic, and Eric Newlyn, aged 26, a motor driver, were convicted of the manslaughter of John Rowland at Bondi, and sentenced to life imprisonment-. Pilgrims To The Pope. Tho Pope received 30,000 pilgrims in August, of whom 50 per cent, were from abroad. One-third of the pilgrims since April came from Britain.
