Second Napier Wool Sale
Slight Easement fa Values
Lambs In Keen Demand
A Satisfactory Clearance
The second Napier wool sale of the season concluded last night, when prices were practically on a par with those reported yesterday—that is, an easing in values on medium and coarser grades of wool, while super grades held their own with prices ruling in November, in some instances showing slight improvement. In some cases lots failed to reach November reserves and consequently were passed in. Unlike the November sale, Bradford was the principal buyer and to the Home operators tell a great proportion of the catalogue, lhe french operators were keen throughout the sale and offerings suitable for them, such as necks and pieces, were eagerly sought after. New Zealand mills competed keenly for super grade lots. Lambs’ wool met with keen competition, the lots generally selling exceptionally well at prices showing a good advaftce on the few clips offered at the November sale. 1 aken all round the sale may be said to have been a very satisfactory one.
BROKERS’ REPORTS.
MURRAY, ROBIOITS AND CO LTD.
We offered a catalogue of 403bales. Bidding ironi the outset wa keen, buu it was apparent tha. prices lor certain classes 01 wool wen not up to the extreme limits paid u the -November sale. AH tine show; wools were on a par with iasi
hut it was in the medium crossbred that there was an easing off of approximately ’ld to Id per lb. A great deal ot this is no doubt accounted ioi by the condition carried by the wool.
Good pieces, showing quality, soln up to iast sale values, while those of an inferior grade were slightlx easier. Bradl ord. America, the Con tinent, and local /nills and scourer: competed strongly on those lots that suited their requirements. Bradfora possibly lilted the greater proportion of the wool. W c offered a few bales of lambs wool and these met w'ith a very keen demand, and brought extreme prices.

The competition throughout was good and finished firm. The catalogue comprised 28,000 bales, our allotment 5350 bales, selling under the hammer 96 per cent. The offering was very varied and the wool generally was not up to last sale. The sale just, finished must be considered satisfactory and shows considerable appreciation from last September London sales. Bradford were very strong and must have taken half the catalogue at prices ruling the same as November, except for ewe and wether top making wools, which dropped id per lb. The lambs wool offered was keenly bid for and many good lines reached 19d. Pieces sold well on our catalogue and were well up to November rates. Bellies showed a slight drop and we think they did not meet with the competition that they did in November. Crutchings again sold well and prices were fully maintained. was not up to the display of the first sale, the wools carrying more, condition. and the longer staple was more in evidence. The buying came from all sections of the trade Bradford being very prominent, and lifted a good weight of the offerings. The Dominion mills*were represented and their competition was felt on lots suiting their particular requirements Compared with the first sale, we w’ould report that supers were pist about on a par. whilst average wools were Id to Hd less than last sale. There were a few lots of lambs’ wool m our catalogue, which realised up to 18Jd. Pieces and bellies were decidedly easier than last sale prices and we quote these al. per lb. Jess. Out of a total offering of about 27.500 bales, our catalogue comprised 1 754 bales Hawke’s Bay wool and 983 bales Gisborne, making our total 2737 bales. As was to be expected, yesterday’s prices were slightly easier than those ruling at Wellington last Monday, December 5, but nevertheless. yesterday's values were above London parity, and m our opinion clients were well advised to accept yesterday’s values, as it looks as if prices must stil] ease a little before wool can be bought for top-makine Yesterday’s catalogue was composed principally of top-makiiin woo] with a lew lots of bright super wool included. and it is surprising that values were not lower. Fine super wool showed little change in value, while medium crossbreds were about a halfpenny per lb. lower, and coarse crossbred and inferior* lots dropped from |d to Id per lb. Lambs’ wool sold exceedingly well, necks sometimes realising extreme prices while pieces, bellies and locks realised full market rates.

LTD Our catalogue comprised 5124 bales from Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast, and 1752 from Gisborne, making a total of 7176. this being one of the largest individual catalogues that has been placed before the buyers for some years. The show of wool was splendid and there was a marked improvement in the get-np of the majority of the clips, indicating that farmers are realising the importance of placing their wares before buyers in an as attractive a way as possible. Of course, most of the wool was not so light in condition as at the November sale, w’hich was to bo expected, being later shorn. In conformity mth Wellington prices for various grades showed a decline, whilst others, notably super grades above 46's quality, were fully as good a,s those obtained during November. The wools showing most decline were medium to coarse average conditioned Heece, whilst pieces and bellies showed a substantial fall ranging as far as onr catalogue was concerned from 2d to 2’d. Lambs’ woo] sold particularly well, all lots reaching prices over our values. All our pooled wool, and interlotted lines sold exceptionally well, the buyers showing .great keenness in securing their requirements amongst these lots. Altogether we sold 87 per cvnt. under the hammer. ‘

Our offering was practically all of purely Hawke's Bay growu wauls, which reached us Irani all parts of the district train Wairoa to Dannevirke, and included approximately add bales of pooled clips I'hcre was a very large attendance of buyers and competition was distinctly more general than at the previous sale. Bradford bidding much more freely though French operators keenly competed, and between them they absorbed the bulk of the offerings. American types of wool wars not abundant, but n-nero suitable lines were presented, they were eagerly sought after. Dominion and Australian mills also bid effectively for their particular types but German operators seemed to be less prominent. The excessive bareness of mills stocks having been replenished out. of the earlier sales which hava been held, will probably account to some degree for the easement in prices met with at Christchurch and Wellington, and sustained at this centre yesterday. It also appears somewhat doubtful whether the economic position in Bradford warrants the advances paid at the opening sales. There was a fairly general acceptance by growers of the Wellington basis, and withdrawals were few, though soma owners were not disposed to meet the decline and placed reserves on their wools too high for buyers to negotiate. Bidding at times was also erratic and accounted for further passings. Clearances in our catalogue, either under the hammer or made immediately following the sale account for tin per cent of our offerings, and in view of Monday’s market the sale yesterday may be considered a satisfactory one to growers. As compared with last sale wool opened up generally in ncavicr condition and there is a certain amount amount of discolouration, but the bulk was of real good topmilking quality. The clip this season is one of quite good length of staple though a good many of lots to-uay snowed ten deraess and some of the hogget wools have also wasly tips.
The decline in values from last sale on gnu and super wools is from par to td on medium and coarse topmaking sorts Id and oa low crossbreds from pur to jd. Bidding on pieces and bellies was Id to 2d lower except on special lines which occasionally equalled lust sale rates. Lambs wool was only in short supply, but met with keen competition ami sold up to 18fd. The following are among the leading prices:—
