LATE CABLES IN BRIEF.
Mechanical Hares Prohibited; The South Australian Legislative Council passed the bill prohibiting the introduction of mechanical hare coursing in South Australia.
N S.W. Arbitration Bill Passed: The New South Wales Legislative Council passed tha Industrial Arbitration Amendment Bill, and the bill prohibiting night betting on licensed racecourses. Both Chambers adjourned until December 20.
Betting Prohibited: The Victorian Legislative Council passed the bill prohibiting betting at mechanical hare coursing meetings.
The Auckland Loan: The Auckland Loan was oversubscribed.
Big Fires in Australia.—Fire destroyed Lo Cornu’s bedding and cabinet work and two adjoining cottages in North Adelaide. The damage is £30,000. Fire at, Laromine (New South Wales) destroyed four shops, the damage being £lO.OOO.
Allegations to be Inquired Into.--
The N.S.W. Cabinet decided to hold an inquiry into the allegations of payments by grocers who held wine licenses in connection with the amendment to the Lio.uor Act. The form of inquiry is not yet decided but, if necessary a Royal Commission will be appointed.
Nobel Peace Prize.—Professors Ferdinand Buisson (France) and Ludwig Guidgo (Germany) will share the Nobel Peace Prize.
National Bank Dividend. —The National Bank of New Zealand declared an interim dividend ■ of 12 per cent, tax free.
