ESSAY COMPETITION. The Essay Competition held during Animal Welfare Week throughout the primary and secondary schools of Hawke's Bay was very well supported and finally 59 essays, covering three sections, were submitted to the examiners, the Very Rev. Dean Mayne and the Rev. J. A. Asher. The examiners report that all the essays submitted' were very good and it was by no means nn easy matter ito select the prize winners. The rota of prize winners is as follows :— Section A: Betty Fraser (Dannevirke South School) 1; Maisio Watts (Port Ahuriri School) 2. Section B: G. Kent (Papuni School) and Z. Crozier (St. Joseph’s (Convent), equal, 1; Nora Strandbeck (Port Ahuriri School) and Betty McCarthy (Port Ahuriri School), equal, 2. Section C: Lorna Luke (Sacred Heart Convent) 1; A. Angus (Napier Beys’ High Schnoll 2: Marjorie Wardell Johnston (Napier Girls’ High School) 3. It is the intention of the Society to conduct an essay competition annually and the committee will be pleased to see even larger entries than this year.
