WAIPUKURAU
NEWS AND NOTES. The weather conditions during the past few days have been very warm, and at times humid. Haymaking has commenced and shearing operations are in general progress. A meeting ot the stewards of tha Waipukurau Jockev Club was held on Tuesday afternoon, when matters ot a routine nature in connection with the forthcoming race meeting re ceived attention. Considerable excitement was caused on Tuesday afternoon when a stimr, closely pursued by dogs, with u drover bringing up the rear, dashed along Herbert street and across the main thoroughfare at the Post Office corner, in to Porangahau mart. Naturally there waa a rapid retreat of pedestrians from the highways thus dangerously invaded
It is pleasing to state that tin, condition of Mrs Huntley-Walker reveals a continued imnrovement Mr. J. Golds l - of Foxton, who met with a painful accident to his right hand at Waipawa recently, while on a holidav visit, is still undergoing treatment in tile hospital, but hopes to be able to regain tha use of his hand shortly. Mr. F. SavHs« is alowlv recovering tho use of the left leg. seriously iniured. about five weeks back nnd has been able to move around thn town of late, with the aid of crotches.
The late Mr Neil Anderson, the first of the victims of the recent motor collision to euccurah to the injuries received, was the fourth son of Mrs and the late Mr. Harold Anderson, of 447. Albert street, Palmerston North, and wa« born and educated in that town.
SANATORIUM HILL ROAD.
It was remarked ,at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, held on Monday night, that tho recent deplorable fatality (subsequently intensified by a second death) should serve to emphasise the essential need for a substantial improvement of this highway, or the carrying ont of a deviation via the Lower Gorge (Waipuku-ran-Onga Onga road) and linking-up with the Tnliapau road on the south side of tl.« Sanatorium Rill. This is a comprehensively desirable proposal, providing a level main highway, also serving Takapau. Onga Onga, and Waipukurau in the one scheme of reading. It is unfortunate that ine representations made by the Chamber of Commerce through the medium of the Wainukurau county, and directly, to the Main Highways Board, as to the latter proposal, have not received special consideration.
