GIB. STRAITS SWIM
RACE CHALLENGE REFUSED London, Dec. 1. Miss Mercedes Gleitze, who swam the Channel this year, and made a second attempt later in the season, has declined the challenge of Miss Millie Hudson, who accompanied her in training, to a swimming race across the Straits of Gibraltar. Miss Hudson says she will race, anyhow, and is departing for Tangier on December 2. Miss Gleitze is now on the way there. Miss Hudson will enter the water with Miss Gleitze, and thus see who is the better woman. They are good friends, but she considers Miss Gleitze ought to consent to making a race ef her swim. Replying to Miss Hudson, Miss Gleitze explains that she has no intention of swimming against time. She has been promised remunerations if she succeeds, and it is her intention to devote the money to an institution she hopes to establish for “down and outs.” At the narrowest points the Straits of Gibraltar are nine miles wide, while the Straits of Dover are 21 miles in width.
