ON THE TRACKS

HASTINGS ATHLETIC MEETING SPLENDID EVENING PROGRAMME. OF FLAT AND CYCLE RACES. There was plenty to interest the fair crowd of spectators at the evening amateur athletic meeting at Nelson Park, Hastings, last evening, when the increased popularity of the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s regular functions was manifested. The programme was a lengthy one, but there was not one dull moment from start to finish. The events were run off promptly, and there was no cause to be dissatisfied with the performances.

Although the times were not very fast—this may be accounted for by the early afternoon rain—the finishes were exciting. In the majority of the events it was necessary to run off heats, and these, too, were full of excitement. There were two items of particular interest. One was the basketball game between two teams of girls, in this the spectators were no doubt given a new aspeci of the game, for there was a splendid display of skill by the girls. 'Hie other star item was the boys’ (under 16) mile race. Nearly 30 lads entered for this race, and the crowd was worked to concert pitch as the budding Nurmis strove vainly to cover the four laps at a pace that even the professional would have baulked' at.
