The executive committee of the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association again met last night. Present, Messrs R. M. Chadwick (chairman), J. R. Stevenson, C. Temperton, J. St. J Hindmarsh, W. J. O’Connell, C. McPhee, R. Worker, B. Tweedie and C. Elmes. Applications for holiday fixtures from Puketitiri and Kaiwaka were favourably received by the committee it being decided to refer the matter to Mr. Hughes, the junior selector, with instructions that teams must be sent. HAWKE & KIRK CUPS. The prospects of Hawke’s Bay’s challenge for the Hawke Cup were referred to by the chairman. Following a short discussion it was agreed that the Association could not press its claims any further with advantage. It was further decided to defer settling a date with Gisborne for the Kirk Cup until something definite was known regarding the Hawke Cup challenge.
HARD TERMS FOR AUSTRALIAN VISIT. In connection with the visit of the Australian team the New Zealand Cricket Council, after having discussed the terms on which visiting teams should be entertained, decided that country associations would have to pay £lOO for a mid-week match Mr. Worker stated that he did not consider that the association should entertain the idea of receiving an Australian team on such terms. Mr. Hindmarsh said that as a guarantor he was sick of having to bear a complete loss year after year. It seemed that visiting teams failed to appeal to the public imagination Usually the only spectators were the guarantors themselves. It was decided to inform the Council that the Hawke’s Bay Association could not agree to accept a match on the proposed financial terms, but they were prepared to consider a match on the basis of a £5O guarantee which, compared with the main centres, was a fair basis for a two-day mid-week match. Mr. Temperton pointed out that it the match could be played on McLean Park the association were likely to get a good gate. Nelson Park had too many entrances and many had not the slightest hesitation in wandering in without paying. The chairman doubted whether McLean Park would be ready in time. The chairman epressed the opinion that the Council had taken too many minor associations under it charge. He considered that it would have been in the interests of cricket il the game in Hawke’s Bay was run on the same lines as Hawke’s Bay Rugby where the whole province came under the control of one union. EIGHT BALL OVER. The committee agreed to continm with the eight-ball over as no complaints had been received since its adoption. It was agreed to inform a number of teams that unless their fees were paid up they would be barred from taking further part in the competitions. Leave was granted to Mr. Worker, representing the Boys’ High School, for th® school first XI. to play Palmerston North on December 14 at Palmerston, and Auckland Grammar Schoo] on December 21 and 22; tho second XI. to play Dannevirke on December 14 or 15.
