HAVELOCK NORTH

ELOCUTIONARY RECITAL The Havelock North Village Hall was fairly well filled last night, when Mr, P. L. Davies, the Christchurch elocutionist, gave a- recital. His numbers were varied, and. ranging as they did from comedy to tragedy, the performer had every opportunity of showing his elocutionary powers. Mr. Davies has a fine resonant voice of great flexibility, and this, coupled with a strong dramatic instinct, makes him an interesting performer. Any effect he attempted he never failed to achieve. Amongst his items were: “Hie Miner’s Revenge” (Sims). “Across t!»e Bridge” (Sims). “Brutus, on the Death of Caesar” (Shakespeare), “The Bells’ 1 (E. A. Poe). “Snorkin"” (Mel. B. Spurr), “Asleep at the Switch” (Bruno), “Oh Memory” (Harris), “Little Irish Rose,” “Crossing the Bar” (Lord Tennyson), “The Mysteries nf the Sea.” "Hamlet on a Future State” and “Mr. Flutter Goes to a Tea Party.” The programme concluded with that powerful and impressive speech "Denver’s Dream.” from “The Silver' King.” This particular excerpt is given with such emotional and dramatic powers as to make the audience forget the stage and the impersonator and see onlv the character depicted. Mr. Davies will remain for a brief period in Hastings and Napier, and intending pupils should note that lie will be teaching through the Christmas holidays at the Cosy de Luxe. Hastings. FIRE BRIGADE DEMONSTRATION On Saturday afternoon next the Havelock North Fire Brigade will hold a grand monster fire demonstration in the Domain, commencing at 1.30. The new fire engine will b« set going by Mrs Turner Williams and visiting teams from Napier. Hastings, Tomoana. and the Napier Railway, together with the local brigade, will give demonstrations of fire-fighting. Afternoon tea will he served lollies and ice-creams will be available, and a good time should be had by everyone.
